Ambrym, part of the Vanuatu Group has erupted 48 times since
1774.
It is a large shield volcano in the central part of the Vanuatu
chain.
The summit houses a 12km diameter caldera probably produced
in 50 AD
in an eruption with a VEI magnitude of 6.

The following stamps were issued by the British administration
in 1977-78

Undated postcard below shows Ambrym in eruption, probably
in December 1913.
The Rev. Maurice Frater from the nearby island of Epi was
a hero during this eruption, rescuing several hundred natives from the island
on a small whale boat.
