Anjouan is an extinct volcanic island, part of the Comores archipelago.

Lavas of the shield-building stage comprise ankaramites, oceanites and olivine basalts, with minor development of hawaiites and trachytes.

Younger lavas consist of basanites and a significant proportion of derivatives following a trend towards phonolite (Flower, 1972) .

The rocks are dated between 0.1 and 1.522 million years.
