The volcano depicted on this stamp is, of course, a figment of the designer's imagination.

 

However, the event which it depicts is now believed by most to have been inspired by an eruption of the volcano Santorini.

 

This eruption, which rated a 6 on the Volcano Explosivity index, took place approximately in 1650BC and apparently led to the demise of the Minoan civilization.
