Bellingshausen Island is a small stratovolcano.
There has been no documented historic eruptions though fumarolic
activity is pervasive.
The island is 1.7 km north-south and 1.2 km east-west.
The summit crater is about 500m in diameter and 60m deep.
Both lavas and tuffs are uniformly basaltic andesite in composition.
Though undated, the morphology suggests Bellingshausen is
one of the most recent volcanoes to have developed in the South Sandwich
Islands.
Uninhabited, the Island was visited by scientific expeditions
in 1930 and 1964.
The stamp below was issued November 8th, 1984.
