Bora Bora island forms part of the Society Island chain.
The Society Island chain parallels that of the Hawaiian chain
and has a similar age decrease to the southeast.
The basaltic rocks from the island have been radiometrically
dated
at between 3.10 and 3.45 Ma.
The stamp illustrated below was issued in 1979.
Very little of the original volcano remains above sea-level.
The next volcano to the northwest (Tupai) has completely submerged.
