Coatepeque caldera is a collapse caldera.

It has an elliptical shape measuring 11 x 7 km

with a lake measuring 5 x 6 km and a depth of approximately 120 m.

The first caldera dates from a plinian eruption about 70,000 years ago.

A second smaller plinian eruption occured about 50,000 years ago.

The most recent acivity was the formation of the Cerro Paco rhyolite dome,

probably within the last 10,000 years.
