Mt Esja is a Plio-Pleistocene volcano dominating the horizon
to the north of Reykjavik.
It is 914 m in height and erupted between 3.1 and 1.8 million
years ago.
The mountain consists of basaltic lavas as well as gabbroic
intrusions and numerous basaltic dykes,
clastic (volcanic and glacial sediments) and rhyolite.
