The Gambier volcanic archipelago, lies some 1,700 km SE of Tahiti.

They are part of a semisubmerged, middle-aged high island similar to Bora Bora.

The hilly remnants of the old volcano are scattered in a huge lagoon,

The largest of these remnant islands is Mangareva.

It is a volcanic cluster almost completely encircled by a 65-km long barrier reef.

The stamp illustrated below was issued in 1964 and depicts Mangareva.
