Corps de Garde, Mauritius
The entirety of Mauritius is volcanic, dating back 8 million
years.
Consequently there has been much erosion in its tropical climate.
Therefore the mountains on the island, though volcanic, represent
the remnants of the original volcano.
On a clear dawn the rays of the rising sun reflects a rosy
hue on the basaltic rock-face of the mountain.
Hence the origin of the name of the town of Rose Hill at its
base.
The highest point is 720 metres.
