Gaua or Mt. Gharat on Santa Maria Island is a stratovolcano
rising 9,000 ft above sea-level.
The volcano has erupted over a dozen times since 1963,
the strongest being of VEI 3 in 1965.
It was experiencing strong fumarolic activity in 1996
