Grimsvotn in south-east Iceland is an active volcano beneath
an ice sheet.
Located beneath the last remaining European continental glacier,
the Vatnajokull.
Eruptions lead to melting of the ice and the formation of
Jokulhlaups -
massive outpourings of water that exceed the pressure of the
overlying ice,
and generally make their way to the southeast.
A major eruption took place in 1996, the most recent in 2004.
The following souvenir sheet was issued in 2007 to celebrate
the International Polar Year.
