Guatavita Volcano
This crater is not listed in the Smithsonian Catalog of active
volcanoes.
On the internet it is described as being an extinct volcano,
a meteorite impact crater and a salt collapse structure.
A shuttle radar image obtained in 1994 indicates that it is
indeed volcanic and the presence of a recent flow
suggests the volcano to be possibly just dormant rather than
extinct.
As such, it would be the northernmost active volcano in South
America.
The lake itself appears to be a regular tourist site, being
the source of the El Dorado legend.
Approximately located 75 km north of Bogota or 100 km SE of
Medellin.
The crater lake is within a 3 km wide caldera.
The stamp below was issued in 1992 to celebrate the 500th
anniversary of the discovery of the Americas.
Many thanks to Chuck Wood for identifying volcano for me.
