Kilauea is the site of the oldest Volcano Obervatory in the
United States.
Ironically, until 2006 it had never been depicted on a US
stamp.
One of the most active volcanoes in the world.
It has currently been in continuous eruption since 1983 with
the formation of Pu'u O'o.
Most of the eruptions are in the magnitude range of VEI 0
to 2.
Though in 1790 there was an eruption with VEI of 4.
Located in the center of the Pacific on the "Big Island"
of Hawaii.
It owes its location to an underlying "hot spot"
which is responsible for the entire Hawaii-Emperor Chain.
It shares the Big Island with Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea (hopefully
extinct), Hualalai (last eruption 1801), Kohala (long defunct) and the,
still submarine, Loihi.
The card illustrated below commemorates the first air mail
flight from Hilo on October 8th 1934.
