Located in SE Iceland at the southwestern corner of the Vatnajokull
glacier.
The Laki fissure swarm opened in 1783 and continued to erupt
in 1785.
During this time over 14 cubic kilometers of lava were erupted,
making it the largest historic lava eruption.
Great quantities of sulphur accompanied the eruption, producing
profound effects on the climate of Europe.
Disease and starvation had a devastating effect on the livestock
and human inhabitants of the island.
