Ol Doinyo Lengai, Tanzania
One of the most remarkeable terrestrial volcanoes in that
it has historically erupted
both lavas and pyroclastic rocks of carbonatitic composition.
It rises just over 9,500 feet above the floor of the Gregory
Rift Zone of east Africa.
The natrocarbonatite lavas are erupted at temperatures around
510 C and only glow at night.
Although black at eruption, they rapidly change to white on
contact with water.
As weathering progresses they become light brown.
The volcano was active in 2008.
The stamp below was "issued" by Malawi in 2007.
The following was issued by Tanzania
As was the following of the summit area.
