The trachytic Longonot stratovolcano is located SE of Lake
Naivasha in the Gregory Rift valley of Kenya.
It is trachytic in composition and contains a 8 x 12 km caldera.
Masai tradition records a lava flow on the northern flank
during the 19th century.
Other seemingly young flows occur on the SW flank.
The volcano is heavily vegetated, thus home to game and thus
home to predators.
My friend Chuck Wood was spooked by the possibility of encountering
lions whilst climbing it.
The following stamp is a cartoon image of what I'm almost
certain is the volcano.
Issued in 1971 to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the
railway line from Kisumu to Mombasa.
