Mayotte is an extinct volcanic island, part of the Comores Archipelago.

Work by Spath et al, 1996 indicates three periods of activity;

an early shield building stage from 15 to about 3.75 million years,

a post-erosional phase from about 3.75 to 2.5 million years,

and a rejuvenescent phase from 2.5 to 1.9 million years.

A wide variety of igneous rocks were erupted, including

alkali basalt, basanite, trachybasalt, phonotephrite, benmoreite,

trachyte, phonolite, basalt, and shoshonite.
