Mount Michael on Saunders Island is in the central part of
the South Sandwich Islands.
The island extends to 990m above sea level and has a 700m
diameter summit crater.
It is a stratovolcano with a lava platform and parasitic cones.
There have been repeated reports of vapor emission from the
summit crater since 1820.
There are no age dates but morphologically it appears that
the entire island is less than a million years in age.
It is possible that secondary cones in the southeast part
of the island have erupted since 1820.
The volcanic materials are basaltic and basaltic andesite
in composition.
The stamp below was issued on November 8th, 1984.
