The volcano Liamuiga (formerly Mt. Misery) lies on the island
of St. Kitts
It is approximately 10 km wide with a 1km caldera and rises
to 3,792 feet above sea level
There is evidence for four Holocene eruptions, 3 of which
were plinian in style.
There are unsubstantiated reports of eruptions in 1692 and
1843.
A good radiometric date of 1845 ± 58 b.p. has been
obtained for an ash.
There are two lava domes on the west flank and one on the
southwest.
Nevis Peak on the island of Nevis has recorded no historic
eruptions.
The mountain was misnamed by Columbus who thought it to be
covered with snow (neive, sp.)
The stamp below was issued in September of 1988
The next stamps were issued in 1923 to celebrate the Tercentenary
of the Colony.
