Île des Pingouins, Crozet Group

(not to be confused with Penguin Island)

Located at 46.5S and 50.4E.

Part of the western group of the Crozet Islands.

Vertical sea cliffs expose lower hyaloclastites, followed by coarse breccias and a summit lava flow.

In 1987 there was no compositional data and two ages, one Miocene and the other 1.1 m.y. (mid-Pleistocene).

The island is 3 km2 and rises to a height of 340 m.

It is uninhabited (not surprising with 300 days of rain per year and winds of 100 km/hr).

The following airmail stamps were issued January 1st 1988 for the peopleless island.
