Saint Helena is a British Crown Colony located in the South Atlantic, 1,200 miles west of Africa and 700 miles southeast of Ascension Island, the nearest landmass.

The island was discovered on May 21, 1502, uninhabited, by the Portugese navigator João de Nova.

From 1815 to 1821 the island was the place of exile for Napoleon I, who died there on May 5th 1821.

The image depicted on the stamps below is the "Badge of the Colony", issued February 1923.

Although volcanic in origin, the island has not witnessed an historic eruption.

The next were issued on chalky paper with multiple crown CA watermark

The next series with same portrait, different King, were issued 1938 to 1940

The next stamps of 1949 have black centers.

And through another reign, same image with Elizabeth II.

The next stamps are a series of paintings of the island issued November 28th, 1976
