St. Paul island rises 268m above the Indian Ocean .

In 1793 smoke and fresh ash were observed on a parasitic cone near the southwest corner of the island.

Fumaroles have been evident for the succeeding two centuries.

Older volcanics represented by tholeiitic palagonite tuffs cut by dikes and a comendite intrusion

are exposed by faults on the northeastern flanks of a younger volcano.

The younger stratovolcano is composed of numerous thin lava flows interlayed with scoria and cinders.

Peripheral scoria cones are aligned along radial fissures.

These younger flows are aluminous tholeiite with an age of 0.5 to 0.04 Ma.
