Unzen Volcano, Kyushu, Japan.

A complex volcano which last erupted 1990 to 1995.

An earthquake generated a tsunami following a 1792 eruption of the volcano.

The tsunami resulted in 12,000 deaths.

Unfortunately the volcanologists Maurice and Katia Krafft,

along with Harry Glicken, were killed by a pyroclastic flow on June 3rd 1991.

Ironically, Harry had been at his post at Mt. St. Helens on May 17th 1980,

when he was voluntarily relieved by David Johnston, who didn't survive.

A drilling program was initiated at the volcano following the early 90's eruption.

It encountered the conduit at a depth of nearly 2,000 meters in 2004.

The stamps on the miniature sheet below were issued November 20th, 1953

The left shows Unzen from the golf course, the right from Chijiwa beach.
