The Vulture volcano is peculiar in being the only Italian
volcano east of the Apennines.
It originated with ignimbrite eruptions about 1 million years
ago.
This was followed by a cone-building phase approximately 500,000
years ago.
A third phase about 40,000 years ago added maar volcanoes,
of which, Laghi di Monticchio is one.
Chemically the erupted materials consist of latites, trachytes,
tephrites and foidites.
