The Vulture volcano is peculiar in being the only Italian volcano east of the Apennines.

It originated with ignimbrite eruptions about 1 million years ago.

This was followed by a cone-building phase approximately 500,000 years ago.

A third phase about 40,000 years ago added maar volcanoes, of which, Laghi di Monticchio is one.

Chemically the erupted materials consist of latites, trachytes, tephrites and foidites.

The following stamp was issued April 23rd, 1994

Many thanks to Grubessi Odino for identifying and providing the stamp.
